Advocacy at NAMI Rhode Island

Advocating for what is right and humane is undeniable important. NAMI Rhode Island wants to end discrimination and demand fair policies. A brain disorder should not be treated any differently than any other physical illness. We sponsor a Spring Community Lecture Series. We have been advocating for less cutbacks of services with our federal, state and local leaders. We also have many other ongoing advocacy efforts all year long.

NAMI Rhode Island is part of the Save our Services coalition and has joined the Campaign for Rhode Island Priorities and the Rhode Island Coalition for Homelessness.

NAMI RI joins the Rhode Island Disability Vote Project

The Project brings together a coalition of people and organizations within the disability community, with the goal of increasing voter registration and voter turnout.

Mission - The Mission of the Rhode Island Disability Vote Project is to mobilize the disability vote through building a nonpartisan and powerful voting bloc of people and organizations interested in disability issues.

Vision - Eighty-five percent of people with disabilities are unemployed or underemployed, and two-thirds live below the federal poverty level. Most do not vote. It's time to increase the numbers of voters and make an impact by turning out the disability vote.

There is no right more fundamental to our system of government than the right to cast a ballot for the candidate of on'e choice. Access to this right is the most basic definition of citizenship, and exercising this right is a central responsibility of every citizen.

The RIDVP envisions a society where everyone:

  • Is treated with respect, regardless of disability or any other factor;
  • Participates in government decision-making;
  • Enjoys access to the services, living necessities, and recognition that they need.
